NOMAD SON - FIRST LIGHT / PILGRIMAGES OF DOOM (Metal On Metal Records)

                                  (Review by Stefan)

I’m still recovering from Nomad Son’s latest output “The Darkening” and it is already time for another release of this band, namely the CD + DVD version of “First Light” with ”Pilgrimages Of Doom”. On the same silver disc, you get both a CD and a DVD so this is a unique piece, a collectors item for sure! Back in 2008, Metal On Metal Records released their debut album in full glory and was completely sold out. I’m not surprised about this fact, the album was a highlight in the circles of Traditional Doom Metal. Doom fans who don't have the album in their collections yet get a second opportunity with this re-release, and additionally they get a brilliant DVD, what do you think about that!

I have already reviewed their debut CD “First Light” and if you check it out, you’ll see I was a damn satisfied bastard at the end. Nomad Son took the entire Doom Metal community by surprise as the album showcased ultra heavy song structures alternating with true headbanging moments that still hit me in the face. The sound quality of “First Light” is splendid - loud, wild and extremely heavy… highly recommended!

Regarding the DVD “Pilgrimages Of Doom”, well I’m even more excited. Make yourself comfortable for more than 2 hours of exclusive material featuring different chapters. Sit tight and watch the mighty great footage of Nomad Son delivering the goods at both Hammer Of Doom VI (incl. 5 songs) and Doomsday IV (incl. 8 tracks) festivals that took place in 2011. I’ve never seen these guys during a live performance before but after watching the first 13 songs on the DVD I can say enthusiastically that Nomad Son is one hell of a fantastic live act, no doubt about this! Great musicians playing Metal of the dark and doomy kind, I keep staring at the TV screen while chills are running down my spine.

As bonus stuff there are excerpts from their warm up show at Headbangers Open Air, 2009 (two songs and an interview hosted by Neudi from Streetclip TV), and two more live tracks from the Doom Shall Rise Festival VII, 2010, filmed by Simone Peruzzi (Metal On Metal Records) who’s the executive producer of the DVD as well. You will also see Nomad Son playing ‘The Light At The End’ from Maltese “Generation" TV Show, and finally you’ll get a nice slideshow filled with photos taken by Metal On Metal Records leader Jowita Kaminska-Peruzzi.

Throughout approx. 126 minutes, I enjoyed this “Pilgrimages Of Doom” DVD thoroughly. It has given me a perfect image of what the band has to offer on stage and beyond. What I have experienced while watching the DVD is quite a lot, a band with loads of great skills playing Traditional Doom Metal with their own twist. Seeing a band live is the best way to pass a proper judgement regarding their musical capabilities. In the case of Nomad Son, I can attest they’re really good. A perfect example for all others who think they are good, although they’re not! Order this unique release right
