MAYFAIR - SCHLAGE MEIN HERZ, SCHLAGE... (Pure Steel Records/H'Art)
(Review by Officer Nice)
There are advantages and disadvantages in the present Metal scène. Old times were better because there were less bands to discover, everything was new and spectacular and we had our own little world. Nowadays there is so much to discover and most bands are suffering harder times to receive a name in the scène. Heavy Metal became a commercial business and the fact that almost every day there are several concerts in a little country like Belgium proves me right.
The result is that almost nobody can stay tuned in what is going on in our movement. I discover every day bands I have never heard of, in some cases they are already popular by a part of the crowd. Others will stay under the surface. What the future of Mayfair will bring is difficult to predict. I was searching more information about this band on the Internet and all I found were superlatives which made me of course curious. Anyway these Germans deliver something special, certainly for a label like Pure Steel Records.
I have to admit this is something special that immediately pulls all the attention of a Rock / Metal fan like me. Mayfair is a band that knows how to write good songs and searches constantly boundaries of several genres, which makes their music varied. These guys keep a constant dark ambient atmosphere into their songs, which makes them also sound Progressive. The heavy distortion guitars, typical for Heavy Metal, aren’t always present but listening to this one I don’t actually care…therefore it’s too exciting listening to this one. A band that is very difficult to label but fuck that anyway. It’s the music that counts!
Opeth meets Fates Warning an Deadsoul Tribe, in a blender with Pink Floyd and maybe some Alice In Chains… and all in a more Rock version. A very good release that can easily please most fans of loud sounding guitar music although I don't know if pure Heavy Metal fans can do anything with it. But be open minded and you will discover a very good release! A condition 'sine qua non' is that you need to be prepared for some complex music, intelligent written and foreseen with the right vibes to touch the soul. Check http://www.mayfairbrigade.com .
