THE BLACK ROOK - THE BLACK ROOK (Independent)

From out of Brasil I received a message on the Facebook page from Metal To Infinity. Yes, we have our own Facebook page and it would be awesome if we could receive more likes on it. I know almost the entire world is looking to Brazil right now and of course the World Championship of the most popular sport has anything to do with it. The entire show will begin next week I suppose but allow me not to talk about football today.

I’d like to spend a few words about this band, The Black Rook. First of all it’s a pretty strange name for a Metal band but it works and along with the eye catching front cover this band knows how to receive my attention. A man that listens to the name of Flavio contacted me to send me the album soon after. It is a professional product and it made me more than curious and after a few spins I’m pretty addicted to this record.

It’s been a long time that I have heard such a good song writing. This band is able to hold me attention during the entire record and every single track has some recognizable or surprising tunes. Although this record isn’t at all cheesy I can sing along pretty fast. This is more than enjoyable melodic Heavy Metal with big slices of Power and Progressive notes. The tunes are playing in my head  and it feels great to use the start button over and over again. The choruses and refrains are very good written and singer Flavio Senra seems to be singer! Well, this man did a fantastic job, believe me. His vocal lines are constantly holding the attention and he has a special timbre in his voice, one that obliges you to give this band a full focus. The riffs and leads from Rubens Lessa are amazing and what I especially adore is the way the guitar supports the vocal lines, by subtle leads in the background.  Flavio Senra is able to do lots of things with his voice, contains a warm yet powerful pair of lungs without being an exceptional singer.

Rubens Lessa seems to be guitar player, bass player and is responsible for the keyboards. What I want to say is that we don’t have a true band yet and that’s a pity. We can only hope Flavio and Ruben Lessa will find some good musicians to make The Black Rook a band. The chance is rather little that we will ever see them in Europe although this band is able to get worldwide support.

With tracks like “Checkmate”, “The Black Rook”, “Forget My Name” and “I Am” they will easily seduce lots of Metal fans. What I can’t find back is the cover from The Doors, “Waiting for the sun”.  That’s a pity because it is a great cover from a great band. Check Youtube for it, don’t forget because you will be surprised!

Fans of bands like Tad Morose, Metal Church, Winter’s Bane, Vicious Rumors, Brainstorm and here and there a bit Tesla or even Whitesnake must surely check this band out. This formation delivers a fantastic debut album with a wide range of diverse tracks. This record will probably end in my top 20 of 2014. There are several websites were you can buy downloads but the band doesn’t sell CD’s and that a pity! But…the band is working on it so… After all Metal fans are old fashioned and want the music in their hands, feel the booklet, watch the pictures, read the thank words and these guys understood our message so be patient!
