(Review by Officer Nice)

Avant Guardian seems to be a Power Metal band from LA / California. US Power Metal addicts shouldnít go wild at once because these youngsters donít actually play the American kind of Power Metal, dark and gloomy with all ingredients these Americans are so well known for.

I received a CD-R from this band and what I noticed at once were two things. A first spin learns this could as well been a European Power Metal band, at least it sounds that way. Second is the fact that I hear a very good produced EP and very good musicians. Especially the guitars are amazing and this product sounds professional.

Besides an intro this EP contains five songs with especially high speed yet varied rhythms, the kind we know from bands like Sonata Arctica, Stratovarius, Edguy, Rhapsody Of Fire and countless other bands that made the good weather at the beginning of this decade. Once and a while I hear main influences of Manticora from Danmark, a band I refuse to put in the list with the previous bands I mentioned because they were too dark to fit that row. Anyway, Avant Guardian contains very good musicians and that makes the band sound Progressive. Call it some kind of progressive European Power Metal band, played by an American bandÖ

If you want to hear some good musicianship Avant Guardian will please you at once with this EP. They make their music sound bombastic at some points and to me it fits this EP well. To be honest Ė and thatís only a personal meaning - they should consider the fact to sound darker in their music. I understand these young lads found their sources of inspiration in the later generation of Metal bands and I a bit older... Yet I am convinced that they are able to sound even more impressive in the future, they already sound overwhelming. Maybe these lads should check bands like Outworld and Darkology to understand my point of view. I suppose it would make them understand what I am talking about. Anyway I am convinced these guys are capable of doing so much more, so much better and ďCall Of AvariceĒ proves me right, itís for a big part just what I am talking about.

No bad words about this band anyway because I believe in these guys. Good arrangements, outstanding drums, bass, keyboards and guitars. Iíll add a pretty good singer for you and the front cover of this EP is really awesome. Itís a pity the band didnít send me an official EP, although I even doubt it exists physically. A band with a future and in itís style itís a goodie, letís hope they overgrow subgenres in the near future. To cross the magical border 90 points I am awaiting their debut.
