MONGREL - RECLAMATION (Thom Hazert Company/Head First Entertainment)

                                   (Review by Stefan)

“Reclamation” from Boston based, female fronted Mongrel is a real tough one to discuss to me! This follow up to their EP called “The New Breed Of Old School” has twelve tracks on board, a real good and dirty sound quality… even the way in which the CD is packed looks professional, lyrics are printed on the inside of the dig-pack! The problem is that I’ve never been a fan of Punk music in my whole entire life – fact about Mongrel is that their style of music is mainly based on Punk Rock with a nod to old school Heavy Metal. At least that’s what I read on the Internet but with all respect and following my own heart – “Reclamation” hasn’t anything to do with Heavy Metal at all.

I agree, some of the guitar riffs give the intention of a Metal feel but the real essence of it is totally missing to me, I don’t feel the rush! Is this a negative rating to the band? Definitely no! Take it from me that female singer named Jessica Sierra has the perfect voice for a band like Mongrel and actually, she would also fit in one or another Metal as well. To describe her in some ways, Jessica exhibits similarities with Punk Metal mistress Wendy O. Williams (WOW/Plasmatics). Mostly hard driven guitars delivering simple riffs as it should be for a so-called Punk Rock/Metal act. I also hear little twists of Stoner Rock with an alternative twist which  allows some more variation… good point!

Mongrel has a strong live reputation – so far, they shared many stages with bands like: The Exploited, The Misfits, All That Remains, American Head Charge, GWAR, Fu Manchu, Prong, Hed(Pe), Dizzy Reed,… This can only proof that Mongrel are certified in the US, THE place where they can build up a nice and glorious career with their own made Punk/Rock/Metal style of music. I would dare to say that here in Europe, it would be different story. With this type of music you can’t make high expectations which is unfortunately for the band but it’s just the way it is.

I hear no highlights on Mongrel’s “Reclamation” album which means that I’m substandard interested in this piece – had quite a good time while listening to the vocals of Jessica Sierra and some of the guitar duties by Adam Savage who showed me a little reviving. Too poor for my True Heavy Metal ears, still my respect is sincere! One last fact to mention: Mongrel uses explicit lyrics and hell no, they’re not afraid to say what’s on their heart. No matter if you’re agree or not, Mongrel don’t care at all and spit it right up into your face and I’m fully agree with that kinda attitude!! Check ‘em out at:
