SATAN - LIFE SENTENCE (Listenable Records)
(Review by Henri)
As you might know Satan put their name on the NWoBHM map in 1983 with their debut album “Court In The Act”. An album that has influenced bands like Metallica, Megadeth and Exodus. After that release the band made some questionable decisions like changing the bandname into Blind Fury (with Lou Taylor on vocals) and back to Satan again and after that into Pariah with Mike Jackson as vocalist. Now, 30 years later, Satan finally comes up with an album that they should have released as follow up to “Court In The Act” instead of those releases as Blind Fury and Pariah !
And what an album it is ! I couldn’t believe what I heard when I listened to this record for the first time. Vocalist Brian Ross delivers his best job ever, especially on ‘Cenotaph’ and ‘Incantations’. His voice sounds even better than in the early eighties. Also the twin guitar work of Russ Tippins and Steve Ramsey just sounds godly ! Satan have always been one of the best things in the NWoBHM genre and hearing this I realise how much I have been missing this. Just about everything is good about “Life Sentence”. The artwork, the songs…. NWoBHM doesn’t get any better than this. TOP NOTCH as they used to call it back in the day.
Be sure to see Satan play live at the Alcatraz Metal Festival on August 10 in Kortrijk !!
