WE ARE LEGEND - RISE OF THE LEGEND (Pure Steel Records)

                                    (Review by Sloof)

A strange name for a band, or should I say a project, as most of the members were involved in other interesting bands in the past. They released an EP in 2012 which caused immediate effect on the German Rock and Pop fans.  Winning an award resulted in an debut album which will be critically acclaimed by their fan base and the European Prog/Heavy Metal fans in general. Pure Legend Records from Germany knows when a band is capable to fulfill the demands of the headbangers so it was obvious that We Are Legend got signed almost immediately.  Since November 8th, 2013, “Rise Of The Legend” is available in the record stores but I’m sure that you will be able to buy the album online as well at various metal sites and webshops.

‘Hungry Mirrors’ is the first track on this debut album and has an interesting piano intro that leads us into a rock’n roll part to build up into heavier gear. The vocals of Selin Schönbeck are effective and add a lot to the melody of the songs, especially when he’s going into the darker and harsh way of singing. ‘Enemy Within’ has a killer start with guitars that are ready to kill and execute. This is the kind of metal that appeals to me a lot, so we’re just hoping that this quality level will linger on for the next coming songs.

‘Birth Of The Legend’ is a short instrumental cut, an intro to the hymn of the album ‘Rise Of The Legend’ that will take about 7 minutes. We hear a slow opening part, followed by a piano intermezzo of Selin Schönbeck, who is also responsible for the vocals of We Are Legend. This track has really a lot to offer, so a few listens is a necessity. There are atmospheric choral parts mixed in the guitars of Dirk Baur and Siggi Maier, which is a rather original approach. I guess that this track can stand out for the whole album as it delivers all ingredients that we are looking for. There is heaviness, there is melody, we hear great vocals and there is a scarce and prodigious element due the many choral parts. It has the bombast of Queen and Savatage, the Heavy Metal of Gamma Ray and the progressive element of Kamelot.

Knowing that some of the members of We Are Legend played in bands like Stormwitch, Coronatus and Abraxas lead us into the statement that none of the mentioned bands are ‘world leaders’ in the H.M. Championship, but we have to take them into account and calculate the skills that are present! The track ‘Out!’ has a bombastic start and after some piano recitals, we get another attack from the six strings monsters. Perhaps the title of the song has something to do with it, but I was thinking on Helloween during this slab of metal, although it’s not referring to their ‘I Want Out’ at all.

We Are Legend delivered a high class Heavy Metal album with a headstrong and obstinate element which cause renovating Metal with a sharp edge at one side and a bombastic edge on the other. This band is only 3 years active, and what they achieved on this debut album makes me longing for more in the near future. This act is here to stay!

My rating:  83 / 100
