JAVELIN: FRAGMENTS OF THE INNER SHADOW (Pure Steel Records/H'Art)
(Review by Officer Nice)
Starting with a dark intro, a woman who seems to be afraid, this album takes off. Shortly after Javelin starts their first official debut album, “Fragments Of The Inner Shadow”. With a fast played track, some pure Power Metal, the listener is invited into the story. I don’t suppose this is a true concept album but these Germans are trying to create an atmosphere, that’s at least a good point.
Javelin produces Progressive Power Metal, to be honest the most interesting kind of Metal to me. The combination of technical played music, in combination with an overdose of Power always works with me…if the most important condition is fulfilled; good song writing. I want my Metal to overwhelm me, in a dark atmosphere but able to let me sing along! Maybe that’s the reason why I worship those first Helstar albums so much. On all points they score brilliant!
But, the problem after all those years is that I keep on searching for such releases and believe me, they’re hard to find. The last years only a few bands could surprise me in the Progressive Power Metal… So, maybe I am not objective enough to listen to this one but I can tell you that I have heard good things. First of all, as I’ve said before, the band uses atmospheric samples, acoustic parts etc. to create some kind of link between listener and band. Secondly the riffing and the arrangements in total are good, well produced and a mixture of the better European Power Metal bands… There’s more than once an American touch and so Javelin often reminds me of for example Zandelle and Wind Wraith, the German Galloglass and the Australian Black Majesty.
No discussion about the musical skills from these Germans. You will hear good played and even touching compositions, “healing” is a good example of my words. It’s a kind of semi-ballad with good riffs and a very good trial to steel the soul of the listener. But it doesn’t really work out for me, however it is a great track, making me believe this band is capable of so much more… The band misses that little secret to overwhelm, but I’m quite sure this kind of musicians are able finding it.
This release is full of good played Progressive power Metal and is for sure a band I will follow in the future. And believe me, it is rather seldom that I say such a thing about a German band… Germany remains the most important Metal scène but will never be the best. Javelin delivered me an exciting record with plenty of good tracks! And keep this singer! Next time you need to take me by the throat guys! Check http://www.javelin-metal.com.
