OBDURATED - I FEEL NOTHING (Target/Mighty Music Records)

It keeps moving in the Metal scène. Uncountable bands are rising out of the ground, all over the world. There are revivals of several genres; Thrash, British Metal, AOR… When will it ever stop? Never we hope. So, the next CD is making a spin for review, Obdurated and their album “I feel nothing”.

This band is heading from out of France, one of the most beautiful countries in Europe. But a country with also lots of problems, especially in the big cities. And while I’m writing this review there is a memorial going on, on the beaches of Normandy. Yes, it has been seventy years ago that the Americans liberated Europe by sending thousands and thousands of heroes…to see that the politics are throwing that freedom away.

Enough history, let’s get to this band. Formed in 2001 they released two albums and an EP before unleashing this one to the earth. This is something especially fans of modern sounding Metal should try out. Influenced by bands like In Flames, Gojira and other Death Metal bands. Especially In Flames wrote some excellent albums and they inspired tons of bands, including these guys (and girl) from Amiens in France.

What you will hear is an overdose of aggression, evil riffs, haunted vocals, thundering drums… All the ingredients for a good Death Metal party are present and a wall of sound will blow your speakers to pieces. This band uses lots of hooks and breaks to make their songs varied. It makes this CD interesting for fans of the genre. What is certainly eye catching are the fast fingered leads that are weaved into these songs. It makes it clear some good musicians are at work here and these kind of solos would fit in lots of traditional Metal arrangements. The instrumental “Heaven” proves me right because of its outstanding acoustic performances, emotional played first class leads. It makes me wonder to hear more about these guitar players in another style!

It’s a very good effort and a band that will always deserve its place on stage. It makes me look forward to the big summer festivals. Obdurated will certainly be a band Death Metal fans already have heard about and these readers can buy this one blindfolded. The rest should decide if what I’ve written fits or not, doubters should visit their website http://www.obdurated-official.com.
