OMEGA CROM - BEYOND CONTROL (Independent)
There are several gems in US Metal waiting for us. Sanctuary, Riot, Firewolfe, The Project Terror… will al release their album very soon. It keeps the American Metal scčne interesting and we can only be satisfied that these bands are active. The old bands are still delivering good stuff – although it’s still a bit ‘wait and see’ – but the new generation is ready to compete. They are also able to surprise the US Metal fanatics although without any big support the new generation will never receive the attention they deserve. I fear Omega Crom will wait the same fate… Omega Crom is a band that comes from out of Vancouver/Canada but allow me to consider them already as an US Metal band, in style, not by location of course. Canadian bands are often producing the same kind of typical sound and ideas into their music as their American brothers. It all sounds different over the Atlantic Ocean but I love it!
Their official debut is dated 2009, an album that didn’t really maintained the attention it had to. This is another disappointment to me because Omega Crom really is a good band. The new album is offered with a nice and attractive front cover and the first notes of the album blows me away at once. High screams, blistering guitars and an overdose of that typical American Power! Omega Crom delivers some kind of technical played Power with big slices of Progressive Metal and Thrash included. The band delivers their stuff on good rhythm sessions, the kind that we, as US Power Metal fans from the first rows, adore.
Omega Crom succeeds to add an ‘epic’ touch in their music. One after another fast fingered solo is weaved into this kind of Metal and it proves some good musicians are at work here. Johnny Ketlo is responsible for that but he’s the lead singer of the band as well. And yes, he did a fantastic job because of his strong pair of lungs with which he’s able to deliver very varied vocal lines. And he delivers the high screams I adore so much in Metal, awesome! In the basic vocal lines you will discover this lad has a very good voice, the kind that keeps you focussed during the entire album. He isn’t afraid to use growls as well and it fits perfectly, it overpowers, it overwhelms and it gives Omega Crom that special aggressive touch!
Fans of Onward, Crescent Shield, Spirit Web, Syris, old Iced Earth but even Eidolon (my Canadian heroes), Megadeth, Forbidden, Agent Steel and Flotsam & Jetsam fans will adore this record. The spirit of the old Iron Maiden and Judas Priest is constantly on this release, no surprise I think. What I also had in mind all the time was Lost Horizon, the Swedish band with the mighty Daniel Heiman on vocals. Omega Crom is able to deliver harmonic tunes into their tracks and this makes this album even more attractive. They describe it as ripping metal, I can’t agree more! When I hear a track like for example “Chaos Theory” I can only bow my head deep! The guest performance of Celine Derval, an unknown female singer to me, is awesome. And again Johnny Ketlo shows what he’s capable off. Also on songs like “Infiltrating the System” he delivers a wide bunch of vocal sounds. This album contains ten strong songs and it would be very disappointing if this band would not even be picked up by a decent label in the near future.
This is to me a very promising band with musicians who are Metal in heart and soul! This kind of music is virtuosic, ear catching, progressive and technical but all in a blender with a perfect amount of aggression and epic touches. In its style, US Power/Thrash Metal this is a top album! This record is well produced and contains only good tracks. This is US Metal from Canada, on a very high level. You won’t hear songs that will make you sing along at once but the vocals, the leads, the impressive wall of bass and technical played drum parts, will leave any US Metal fanatic speechless behind. I suppose on stage a second guitar player will be necessary to reproduce what I hear right here! This is another surprise dated 2014 and a band I will keep my eyes on forever.
