SATANIKA - NIGHTMARE (Iron Shield Records)

Satanika was formed in 2009 in the area of Rome, Italy, and after releasing several EP’s and two full-length albums, they recorded this new output ‘Nightmare’ for Iron Shield Records. The band describes their music as a mixture of Thrash Metal and Black Metal and their lyrical topics are preferable about Sex, Satanism, Horror and Violence. I haven’t’ heard of this band before, but from now on, their music is stuck between my ears as some songs on this album are so brilliant and ingenious that they will linger on for some weeks!

For example the first song ‘Electro-Shock’: when this track begins we get a stampede of metal riffs and deadly drumming by Diego Tasciotti. When vocalist Cristian Renzi screams from hell, it’s obvious that many things are going to happen. The vocals are so harsh and brutal, that I had the very first Jag Panzer EP “Tyrants” in mind. When Harry Conklin a.k.a. The Tyrant spitted his lyrics in ‘Battle Zones’, I was dazed and confused for weeks. That’s the same feeling that I have with Satanika. The vocal chords of Cristian are so profitable that only few can manage what he’s doing. The breaks and hooks are present all the time, and you won’t be able to keep your neck still. This is a massive attack that will appeal to many metalheads!

‘Mask Of Satan’ is the next track, and has a totally diverse approach. The vocals are totally different, and I guess that there has been a guest vocalist involved? It’s not mentioned on the info sheet that accompanied my promo, but although it’s totally different, it’s has the typical Satanika musical influences as well. The next song ‘The Black Queen’ is again really brutal and is thrashing all around! I didn’t know that Italy had such a flourishing Thrash metal scene, but with this release they can team up with German legends as Destruction, Sodom and Kreator. If you add them with the Venom attitude of those golden days, you might have an idea what Satanika is all about!

All tracks have samplers or intros to guide you into the right mood and atmosphere and if you know that this band is into horror and Violence, you know what to expect. ‘Sacrifice The Bitch’ and ‘Deathwitch Possession’ are brutal to the bone and ‘Carnal Violence’ welcomes you directly to Hell! The guitars of Gilberto Peri are vicious and mean, the vocals of Cristian are spitting and cursing while the rhythm section of Diego (Drums) and Antonio (Bass) are unchaining Cerberus, the three-headed-dog from the crypts of Evil. This release is perhaps the most beautiful ‘Nightmare’ that you will ever have and brings Italy to the next Thrash metal hope of Europe!
