SEASONS OF THE WOLF - ANTHOLOGY 1988 - 1991 (Witches Brew/Pure Steel Records)

My first meeting with Season Of The Wolf was when I found their song “Victims Of Darkness” by coincidence on the Internet. This track blew me away and I searched that album at once. I don’t know how many times I have listened to that specific song, uncountable times. The rest of that record was good old school Heavy Metal and ever since I have bought every release from this band from out of Florida.

Now I have a double disc on my desk, under the name “Anthology 1988-1991”. To be honest I am a bit confused reading these are the first two albums, I thought the self-titled record was their debut, re-issued on vinyl in 2009. Nevertheless it’s a good thing to hear from the band again.  Their real latest effort is dated 2007, a bit too long for a band to hold the attention of the fans…

This double disc is certainly worth checking it out because the band was at their strongest in their early years to me. That Eighties kind of pure Heavy Metal, with a Seventies obscure atmosphere in it must be heard. It makes this band pretty original. This is old school Metal which will bring you in a special mood. Seasons Of The Wolf has even some Progressive influences and that makes them even more special. Wes Wadell has a very special voice, a very unique vocal sound and that makes this band something special. Not that his voice sounds similar as for example David Taylor, the mighty first singer of Jacob’s Dream, but both have that something special in their timbre. That’s one of the main reasons I really like this band.

Seasons Of The Wolf plays with a pure heart. The leads are emotional played and I hear awesome tunes all the way. These are gifted musicians who know what good song writing is all about. The bit of psychedelic forces in their music are awesome but for some reason the band left that path in their later works. I adore this dark kind of Metal, delivering the kind of atmosphere we know from, for example the old Mercyful Fate and lots of NWOBHM bands like Angel Witch. If Seasons Of The Wolf would have started in the early eighties, I am pretty sure they would have written history!

I don’t know if you are familiar with the band, if you aren’t you can easily pick this one up. Two good albums for the price of one! It’s old school and although reviewers from big magazines are turning their back from this kind of bands you should listen to my advice! This is the kind of Metal you need to buy on vinyl, if possible, it will bring you back to memory lane! Great release! Check
