While the world leaders are remembering the fallen heroes of the beaches in Normandy I was listening to a band from out of Turkey, called Vengeful Ghoul. What has that to do with one another?  Nothing as a matter of fact except I realized that Turkey isn’t the most democratic country on earth, so I couldn’t think about the one without reminding the other.  I even doubt if Belgium or even the USA are ‘so’ democratic but we can’t hide the truth that some countries have bigger problems if we talk about freedom, no? The beauty of Metal is not only the brotherhood amongst those who are into the scčne but it doesn’t really matter if you’re rich or poor, ugly or beautiful, smart or dumb, from the east or the west… Metal has no boundaries and for us it’s all about the music and we are all colored black, the universal color of evil. So we don’t mind where the music is heading from. So yes, we have a band from Turkey now, a land without a history in Heavy Metal…let Pentagram / Mezarkabul be the biggest exception.

The intro with some verses from the Koran (I suppose) gave me a bad feeling the very first time and even negative goose bumps, especially in combination with flying bullets and falling missiles. It’s my point of view about the Islam nowadays,  about cowardly medieval jihadists and senseless wars, but Vengeful Ghoul has thankfully nothing to do with it! These are young people who want to play Heavy Metal, nothing more, nothing less! After listening uncountable times to this gem I bow my head deep for these guys! Ever since I received this CD I have hardly listened to any other stuff. “Timeless warfare” holds me in its grip of evil and I just love it! This is Heavy Metal as it is supposed to be and especially fans of US Metal should buy this blindfolded! This band blends the best of the NWOBHM legacy,  Thrash Metal and Progressive tunes and these are the major ingredients for a good US Power Metal album….from Turkey.

This album breathes darkness and is full of awesome hooks, fantastic leads, outstanding arrangements and overwhelming tracks. This band delivers the goods as they are supposed to and those razor sharp riffs, supported by thundering drum parts and heavy loaded bass guitars, are the way any Metal fan wants to hear his music. Those double bass drums are supporting the overload of mind-blowing guitar works and the strong production leaves you speechless behind! Awesome song writing from a band that is able to write in different styles, even within the tracks.

The biggest trump of this band is without any doubt singer Emre Kasapoglu, what a talent! This lad contains a very strong clear voice with a very wide reach. I just adore his vocal sound and the vocal lines he uses. The higher pitched vocals in the refrains and choruses are just fantastic and I adore his high screams! His voice is strong and is heading somewhere in between Marc Osegueda (Death Angel, Swarm) and Tim Owens (Iced Earth, Judas Priest, Winters Bane, Beyond Fear Yngwie Malmsteen, Charred Walls of The Damned). Mind crushing!

Another word must be spend on Ozgur Nair, lead guitar player from this band. I don’t know where this lad has been hiding all those years but it became time to show his talent to the world. Along with Senem Undemir he’s responsible for those blistering riffs but his leads are really awesome, fitting each and every song all the time. Also drummer Volkan Beykoz and bass player Görken B˙üyükesmeli deserves a positive note in this review because they are responsible for that full sound, that overwhelming full sound, this addictive full sound! I’ve read that the band made this album with their own studio equipment, well, let me bow my head deep for this piece of art.

And the songs? I can’t say which one is my favorite one but at least “The Sovereign Place” is one of them and the high pitched vocals, the screaming yet sentinel leads and the overdose of Power are at least the reason to adore this one!  The varied arrangements, the way the vocals are seducing the listener… Awesome! And the beginning scream and solos on “Ruthless Crow”! I worship this kind of Metal because of its purity!  Another special track is “Schaukelstuhl”, which is a song with German lyrics. It gives a bit of a Rammstein feeling, especially because of the low tempo of this track! This is Metal generally in vein of Nevermore, Sanctuary, Helstar in their ‘Nosferatu’ era, Winters Bane and lots of other first class US Power Metal formations. Even Judas Priest on their ‘Jugulator’ album is on my excited mind.

This is buy or die! This record is in a pole position to be my ‘album of the year’. Check and buy at
