ZARPA - BESTIAS DEL PODER (Pure Steel Records)
Before I did this review, I had never heard of this band. And although there exists a huge Spanish metal scene, I have to admit that I don’t know many bands originating from Spain either One band that comes to mind are the legendary 80's band Baron Rojo which had their global fame. I was surprised reading that Zarpa is even older and was formed before Baron Rojo. How come they are unknown to me if they are so popular in Spain? The reason is quite simple and is a thing many metalbands experience. Bad labels with poor ways of distribution don't get records wider spread than the home country. Luckily nowadays we have Internet and good quality labels that spread music around the corners of the globe. Same thing happened with Zarpa on the German label "Pure Steel Records".
Bestias Del Poder was released in July, 2014, 2 years after the 2 (!) previous releases. The band was formed in '77 (first named "Wolframio") and made 15 studio albums to this day. The record is filled with some fine Heavy Metal songs. Good pure riffin' in a traditional way, the way I like it myself. They did a good effort on making the music pure and energetic. On the other hand, some songs sound more like Power Metal. A little more slowly paced, lyrics brought quite a bit softer and use of some keyboard sound effects. Personally this style of music isn't my cup of tea. A lot of people won't agree with me on this matter, but hey, we all have different tastes in music, right?
The Spanish songwriting is a turn down for me too. Not understanding a single word of the lyrics makes the songs a little bit boring. Moreover, some paces are sung in a melancholic way which I really dislike. Don't get me wrong, the singer is pretty good, but they should have kept up a faster playing tempo during the whole album. A slow or depressed voice makes the album less interesting. Heavy Metal should at least sound heavy, shouldn’t it ?
According to me they composed some filler to deliver this album. If you haven't enough songs yet, you should wait longer and write better songs in order to deliver a good quality product. The production isn't bad at all, but not perfect either. Vocals are too much in the 'foreground' and the drums sound like if they were isolated. Music like this needs a full bombastic production. Obviously the perfect sound costs money and this band lacks a good production. Sadly it's a common thing for less known bands.
This record contains some great ideas. However it also includes a few less interesting songs which I personally would skip. Zarpa has probably a big fan base in Spain, but as I’ve already mentioned, it is not my bag of tea. I can only approve this effort to native Spanish speakers or die hard fans of these guys.
